As Rebecca Solnit says in Wanderlust, de-corporealisation is a mainstream experience, a product of automobilisation and suburbanisation. Walking has been, since the late 18th century, an act of resistance to the mainstream. It stood out when its pace was out of step with its time, and walking became a conscious choice. In many ways, walking culture was a reaction against the speed and alienation of the industrial revolution.
This installation was conceived for the window of the Efremidis Gallery, Berlin (2019) located at Ernst-Reuter-Platz, where there is a constant flow of pedestrians due to the fact that the T1 University is also located. Collecting the register of walking and presenting it as a conscious act, not only as a transitive fact but as a being in itself. The contact of the material on the ground, which insulates and protects us; the shoe. An ode to this object stuck to the ground and in constant movement. Writing and walking resemble each other. Language is like a path, it cannot be conceived all at once, it develops over time.
On this occasion, Walkers is presented at the Sala de Pescadores in Alicante, readapting the installation to the space (2024).
